Bare-earth and first-return elevation data. Grid elevataion data derived from a lidar survey of Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS). Lidar is a form of toporgaphic mapping which uses a pulsed laser ranging system mounted onboard an aircraft to take high density ground elevation measurements. This data is collected by NASA and sent to USGS for conversion to geotiff images (see suplemental information). The images are then sent to the NPS where they are converted into a single grid for use in an ArcGIS software environment. This is bare earth surface of the lidar survey flown on this date, meaning that all vegetation and non-hard surface returns have been removed. There should also be a first return surface calculated for the same date. See supplemental information for details on the EAARL (Experamental Advanced Airborne Reasearch Lidar) system used. One goal of the Project is to produce highly detailed and accurate digital elevation maps of National Seashores and coastal parks for use as a management tool and to make these maps available to natural resource managers within the parks.
