The Martin Van Buren home, Lindenwald, was historically significant from 1797 to 1862. Its primary period of significance is 1839 to 1862, when it served as the retirement home of the eight president of the United States. At the time of this report, the structure was being restored and rehabilitated to the period 1850-1862. It would serve the visiting public as a restored historic house commemorating Martin Van Buren's political career and depicting his life on the estate. Volume I: Section I of this report contains the administrative data concerning the Van Buren home. Section II provides a brief description of the site and structure, including previous planning and research. Section III describes the physical evolution of the home and is coordinated with the evolution drawings. Section IV is the body of the report, containing detailed descriptions of the exterior and interior of the home. Most of this section is arranged by location, but several systems are discussed in a separate section. Section V presents the philosophy that guided the recommendations and a summary of the recommendations. Section VI contains the results of specific types of data and fabric analysis that were performed. Volume II: This document contains the appendices to the Historic Structure Report, Architectural Data Section.
