Murdock N, Smyth RL, Nordman CW, Emmott R, O'Donoghue B, Flaherty P. 2013. Long-term monitoring protocol for cobble bar communities: Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (BISO) and Obed Wild and Scenic River (OBRI). Natural Resource Report. NPS/APHN/NRR—2013/698. National Park Service. Fort Collins, Colorado

Cobble bars were designated as one of the APHN Vital Signs to be monitored, providing early warning of conditions that would require management intervention or mitigation. Information gathered from this monitoring, in concert with water quality monitoring, will provide park managers with a baseline against which to assess future changes in this imperiled community and its rare inhabitants, detrimental resource changes associated with water quality degradation and disruptions of natural hydrological cycles, as well as early detection of invasive exotic species.
