To effectively manage for the recovery of this endangered sparrow, it is critical to understand all aspects of its life history, including its ecology during both the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Our research focuses on elucidating the non-breeding season ecology of the Cape Sable seaside sparrow in Everglades National Park, particularly movements, habitat use, and survival. The ecology, behavior, and habitat associations of the Cape Sable seaside sparrow during the non-breeding season remain poorly understood. One reason for the lack of information on non-breeding season ecology is the sparrow's extreme secretive nature during parts of the year (Werner and Woolfenden 1983). This secretiveness makes it difficult or impossible to study the sparrow's behavior and ecology through direct observation.
