We intend to use acoustic bottom classification equipment (QTCView Series 5, Echoplus) toproduce maps of bottom types based on the acoustic backscatter of a signal sent from the surface. This work is in conjunction with, and planned in exactly the same areas as, the work proposed by the USGS (St. Petersburg Field Office) and NASA (Stennis Space Center) under permit BISC-02-016. No sampling of actual material (sand, plants, or animals) will be undertaken, but after the boat based surveys (acoustic single-beam survey lines ground-truther by towed video camera), divers will perform some transect sampling in strategic location in order to provtde quantifiea ground-truthing points. After the field word, the acoustically-derived seafloor classification data will be compared with the airborne and spaceborne cremotely sensed classified data obtained by USGS and NASA. This will allow to decide in which conditions optical remote-sensing is superior to acoustic remote-sensing and/or vice versa.
