After their failure to breakthrough, the reorganized Confederate Peterburg defense line on June 18, 1864, the Union generals detemined to invest the city partially by a line of entrenchments aimed at the South ---- Railroad. These earthworks were to consist of redoubts connected ------ pits, fronted by abatis, from which entire divisions could be withdrawn at any time, leaving a sufficient force to hold the fortifications. The corps pulled out of the works would be free to assail General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia "in unexpected quarters south, or even north, of the James."
