Reports reached Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant's City Point, Virginia, headquarters at the beginning of February, 1865, that the Confederates were employing huge wagon trains to haul supplies into Petersburg for consumption by the Army of Northern Virginia. Rations stockpiled at depots in North Carolina, it was said, were being shipped as far as Hicksford, 40 miles below Petersburg, over the Petersburg & Weldon Railroad. At Hicksford, the commissary supplies were removed from the cars and loaded onto wagons. Upon leaving the temporary railhead, the wagon trains rolled up the Meherrin River valley to the Boydton Flank Road, then along that road through Dinwiddie Courthouse and on to Petersburg.
