"The mid-coast region of Maine known as Downeast is an area of closely knit seafaring communities which saw increasing tourism in the 19th century. The extensive archive of seasonal visitors’ observations continues to influence both scholarly and popular perceptions of Downeast through powerful and persistent ideological constructions of seafaring communities.
