Dendrochronology in national parks: a Mammoth Cave case study

This article gives an explanation of tree-ring analysis and the importance of the white oak (Quercus alba) in dendrochronology. A white oak chronology was constructed from corings taken from Mammoth Cave National Park and a correlation of those results with Bowling Green, KY meteorological data from 1889 to 1985 was made. Methodology is given and a figure shows the indexing for the Mammoth Cave white oak and a comparison with a Central States Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) reconstruction on 7 white oak chronologies (including Mammoth Cave) for the time period 1650 to 1985. A comparison is made between corings from the white oak and a northern white-cedar (Thuja occidentalis) from Gaspi Peninsula, Canada. The authors justify their techniques and present information to show that coring causes no long-term injury to the affected trees.
