This document addresses the need for ecosystem monitoring within the National Parks to determine normal limits of variation, ecosystem health, and to identify illness at an early stage to effectively and economically prevent disaster. Channel Island's step-down plan is given as an example of a monitoring plan. Like a schematic plan, it shows the steps to monitoring the natural resources of the Channel Islands National Park.
