The only limestone fen in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and in this part of Pennsylvania is partially maintained by periodic clearing of woody vegetation in a powerline right of way. This provides habitat for several rare plant species. However, beaver activity raised the water level, threatening these rare plants, but at the same time creating new wetland habitat for the state endangered bog turtle and other herpetiles. To maintain a balance between "natural" beaver and wetland and the "artificial" fen and rare species, PVC pipes were installed to maintain enough water for the beavers without impacting the fen.
