A four-year elk calf mortality study on the Yellowstone northern range, undertaken to determine the causes and rates of mortality during the first year of elk life, has now been completed. Ever since adoption of the natural regulation policy in 1969, the National Park Service has received considerable criticism for apparent lack of controls on the elk population. This article tells the results of the study done on the predation of the elk calves in Yellowstone.
