Resource managers restore the historical fire regime and old-growth forest structure at Mount Rushmore in order to reduce the potential for stand-replacing crown fire and susceptibility to mountain pine beetle infestation. The recent research and fire management projects have contributed to an increased awareness of the significance of the natural resources at the memorial.
