This report gives a detailed history of the Everglades. Historical data includes geography, geology, flora, fauna, climate, cultures, settlement, commercial activities, and scientific exploration. The report goes back 3,000 years ago when prehistoric tribes entered the everglades, continues with European settlement beginning in 1493, U.S. acquisition of Florida in 1819, and then focuses in the Seminole Wars starting in 1817 for several chapters. Other historical events covered in the report include the drainage of the everglades and the establishment of Everglades National Park.
