A report discussing the population decline in wading bird species in the everglades and factors impacting the population restoration efforts of these populations. Wading birds are species within the order Ciconiformes, which nest and feed in wetlands. This group includes the herons, egrets, storks, ibises, and spoonbills. The Everglades region is a vast wetland, which historically has supported very large numbers of both wintering and breeding wading birds (Robertson and Kushlan 1974). Wading birds are an essential ecological component of wetlands ecosystems, capable of moving many thousands of tons of nutrients in a single season (Kahl 1964, Kushlan 1977, Christy et al. 1981) and have important effects on prey populations, such as dampening population cycles and maintaining species diversity(Kushlan 1976a).
