A report describing the turtle sightings at DRTO in 1994; tables include numbers of crawls, nests, eggs and hatchlings. The Dry Tortugas is a near pristine marine environment located seventy mi les west of Key West. When Ponce de Leon visited the chain of seven islands in 1513, he called them Las Tortugas due to the abundance of sea turtles. Mariners later added the word dry to signify the lack of fresh water. Over 170 turtles were butchered to feed his crew, marking the first exploitation of the rookery.
