A 3-year research investigation of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations in the prairie/tree island habitat of the Big Cypress National Preserve (hunted site--Stairsteps) and the Everglades National Park (protected site--upper Shark River Slough) initiated in March 1989. This research study is designed to elucidate selected population characteristics of white-tailed deer in the Big Cypress National Preserve (BCNP)/Everglades National Park (ENP) for the purpose of determining the biological potential of the herd as (1) a food resource (prey base)for the endangered Florida panther, and (2) a recreational resource for sport hunting.
