The National Park Service proposes to improve and redesign or establish ten interpretive/orientation wayside areas (turnouts) adjacent to U.S. Highway 41 (the Tarniarni Trail), and Turner River and Loop roads in Big Cypress National Preserve, Collier and Monroe counties, Florida (General Project Locations, Map 1 ). This action is needed because safety on the Tarniami Trail is compromised by traffic patterns, high speeds, lack of adequate turnouts, and visitors wishing to stop and view Preserve resources. In 1996, the accident rate for this section of the Tarniami Trail highway was 136 percent higher than the statewide average rate. Additional turnouts along the Tamiarni Trail and associated roads would appreciably reduce accident rates, improve safety, and enrich the visitor experience.
