The Landscape Dynamics Lab (LDL) at the University of Idaho worked with the Upper Columbia Basin Network (UCBN) of the National Park Service to accomplish a landcover classification for the area described as the City of Rocks National Reserve. LDL has completed efforts to acquire, process, and analyze satellite data to provide a more accurate and updated landcover classification for use by specialists and managers. These maps of landcover were derived from analysis of ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer), using a combination of various classification techniques to generate the data. The final landcover classification achieved an overall accuracy of 89% at a cost of approximately $0.60/acre. These results demonstrate the ability to develop high quality landcover classifications in a cost and time effective manner.
