Landsat TM and ETM+ imagery acquired Feb. 1-Aug. 31, 1985-2011 was classified to cloud, snow, or snow-free. For each pixel, the Julian date and snow status for all non-cloudy observations was analyzed using a binary classification tree. The day of year separating the snow from the snow-free season was returned. In the case of pixels where the classification tree did not return a split or where the split was from snow-free to snow, the proportion of snow-covered observations was used to assign the pixel to the usually/always snow-free, usually/always snow-covered, or no pattern category.
