The waters of the District of Columbia provide a home for many species of resident and migratory species of fish. The District Department of Environment (DDOE) is dedicated to conserving and managing these fish species through scientific monitoring and fisheries management. There are several sampling practices utilized to monitor these fish populations. They include: electrofishing, low frequency electrofishing, seining, push-netting, gill-netting, and trapping. Sampling regimes have been designed and implemented around these various sampling techniques as a method of better understanding the population dynamics of the overall fishery.
