The objectives of this project were to; 1) measure the change in stem concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates and selected phenolic compounds related to ungulate herbivory and daily temperature variation for a two year period, 2) identify some of the phenolic compounds involved in the ungulate/willow interactions, 3) determine if phenolics are produced during the willow dormant period, 4) determine if changes in phenolic concentrations are directly related to carbohydrate levels, 5) identify the relationship between date of bud break and number of days with minimum temperature above 0ºC and 6) determine the timing of the end of willow growth period related to day-length.
