This manual is intended to aid in field identification of plants found in the sagebrush steppe regions of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO). Over 660 plant taxa have been identified at CRMO, but this manual focuses on the species characteristic of sagebrush steppe vegetation, especially that of the over 500 kipukas that dot the lava-flow landscape of CRMO. The kipukas are patches of sagebrush steppe that are isolated within the lava flows that cover significant portions of CRMO. ‘Kipuka’ is the Hawaiian for ‘window’, and the kipukas are islands of native sagebrush steppe vegetation that provide views of the varied and rich flora of sagebrush steppe, with little influence of current-day land uses.
