This document gives a brief background of historical and projected climate change trends for the nation and the Acadia region. National trends are from the National Climate Assessment and associated technical reports (http://ncadac.globalchange.gov/). Historical trends for the park are from a local long-term weather station (Acadia NP, ME, station 170100, located within the park, cdiac.ornl.gov) and future projections (2035-2085) are based on Kunkel et al. (2013). Temperature is projected to increase 2-3 °F by mid-century and 4-7 °F by the end of the century and precipitation projections indicate minor change. Climate change is also likely to result in more frequent heat waves, droughts, floods, and an extended frost-free season. Understanding climate change projections and associated levels of uncertainty will facilitate planning actions that are robust regardless of the precise magnitude of change experienced in the coming decades.
