From Official Background:"The European fire and (EFA), Myrmica rubra (Hymenoptera: Formicidae L.), is a serious invasive pest threatening both the ecological health of the park and enjoyment of park visitors. This highly aggressive stinging ant is present in dense numbers in several sites across the island in both high use and remote natural areas. In 2011, several sites were selected for site specific fire ant management. Those sites were treated with a variety of control products and fire ant populations were monitored to determine the effectiveness of each strategy. All sites in 2011 had varying degrees of success depending upon the product and dissemination methods used. We analyzed those results and developed a new set of strategies which were deployed in 2012. We monitored and treated all sites from 2011 in addition to two new sites. A major focus of the 2012 study was examining non-target effects of both the fire any themselves, and fire ants with the least amount of ecological disturbance possible. Out final results will be applicable to park managers and home owners with fire ant infested property. The information we have gathered over the last several years will be made available to both the park and the public in the form of outreach material."
