A pilot study was conducted in 1999 by Seawead (Southeast Alaska Wilderness Exploration Analysis and Discovery) to determine the relative distribution and behavioral response of humpback whales to vessels in the Point Adolphus area. The success of the 1999 work led to the 2000 study funded and conducted by Glacier Bay National Park and the University of Alaska Southeast in collaboration with Seawead. The 2000 data are summarized in a separate report (Womble and Kelly, 2001). The following summary was compiled to compare the 1999 and 2000 data, for the purpose of determining whether 1999, 2000 and 2001 scan data can later be validly compared.
