From Official Report: "The 16th season of Acadia’s Hawk Watch has ended amid a good number of birds, rangers, intern, volunteers, and visitors. The north ridge of Cadillac Mountain once again proved to be a great perch to watch and count a diverse family of diurnal birds of prey that pass this way via the coastline of their journey south for the winter. The official Hawk Watch season lasted from August 22 to October 12 this year. Forty-six weather-permitting days allowed 217.25 hours of observation… And raptors there were this year: 3,179 strong, our fourth highest number since 1995… Indeed, we had 231 raptors migrating in August, second highest August total, as well as the second highest daily count with 82 birds… Most species counts were above average. The only species below average numbers were cooper’s hawks and turkey vultures… The good news this year is that American kestrels were back in large numbers, above average for the first year since 2007, and the second time in 6 years…” The report continues to summarize findings and presents several tables of species counts per day of the watch 2010, extended season 2009 results, visitor statistics, species totals year to year, and Acadia raptor record summaries.
