From Official Report: “Another season of Acadia’s Hawk Watch has come and gone and what an interesting season it has been. This 17th season will be remembered for a long time for an amazing anomaly day with thousands of broad-wing hawks passing by Cadillac Mountain. For those that witnessed the event, this was an unbelievable experience and an example of how weather really can affect the migratory routes of diurnal raptors that nest north and east of Acadia National Park…” The report continues to describe and summarize the series of weather events that led to abnormally low numbers of hawks early in the season in August and then the influence of Hurricane Irene on migration counts in late August and early September. By mid-September the weather, namely an inland hurricane, created conditions that permitted large numbers that had never before been documented. The report continues to summarize the findings and attached you will find tables of 2011 hawk watch daily data, daily visitor staff statistics, yearly visitor statistics, species totals year to year, 2010 extended season results, and raptor records.
