The purpose of this study is to determine Whether or not the Birch River in West Virginia is free-flowing and possesses outstandingly remarkable values which qualify it for adidition to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System and whether any eligible segments are suitable for inclusion in the National System based on such factors as the significance of the resource values present, threats to these values, and extent of public lands in the river area; costs required for acquisition development and management and operation; public, local or state interest in acting to protect and manege the river; and the feasibility and timeliness of such action.This report on the Birch River was prepared under authority of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (Public Law 90-542, as amended) enacted in October 1968 which states: It is hereby declared to be the policy of the United States that certain selected rivers of the Nation which, with their immediate environments, possess outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural, or other similar values, shall be preserved in free-flowing condition, and that they and their immediate environments shall be protected for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.
