From Official Background: "The European fire ant [EFA], Myrmica rubra, is a serious invasive pest threatening native fauna and plant health in many areas of Acadia National Park [ANP], as well as interfering with visitor use of park facilities. This aggressive stinging and has invaded both developed areas, such as picnic sites and campgrounds, and natural areas within the park. Over the past eight years, our studies of these ants in ANP and other areas in Maine have elucidated a considerable amount about their ecology, ecosystem impacts, and potential management strategies that can now be applied to managing the ants within ANP. Since the major portion of the park is geographically complicated (spread across four townships abutting significant residential populations) and ant infestations often cross park boundaries into private properties, site-specific management strategies are needed. This project, with significant in-kind support from ANP and the University of Maine (UMaine), will develop and evaluate site-specific management of the European fire ants, using an integrated pest management approach involving a combination of least-toxic strategies. Our activities and results will be disseminated to park visitors and staff, and also throughout the neighboring communities, where these ants are a serious concern for businesses, homeowners, and managers of adjacent conservation land.”
