The publication is concerned with key decisions and directions taken by the National Park Service in implementing the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and successive amendments to the Act. It does not address the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation after its National Park Service ties were severed in 1976, therefore, nor other preservation-related legislation in the past 20 years (1966-1986) beyond the tax provisions that so heavily influenced the programs under the Act. It gives short shrift to both the operational details of these programs and their major accomplishments.
