Status report on study #GRSM-01102, with bird survey sample sites and times, summarized data, and comments. The data foundations of this research are in the resurvey of historical bird census sites in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These historical data come from multiple points in time. Fawver conducted censuses of breeding birds in 26 areas in 1947 and 1948, ranging in size from 4 ha to 12.8 ha (Kendeigh and Fawver 1981). These sites were classified by vegetation structure and systematic vegetation records were obtained (Fawver 1950, Whittaker 1956). Ten of these sites were subsequently revisited by Wilcove (1988) in 1982-1983, who resurveyed the areas for birds following Fawver’s original methodology. By revisiting many of Fawver’s sites and all of Wilcove’s sites, we have a unique opportunity to answer numerous questions that can only be explored over long periods of time. Across all 83 surveys, a total of 3,333 individual birds were recorded of 57 species (Table 3). The most frequently identified species was the Dark-eyed Junco (391 individuals), followed by Black-throated Green Warbler (274 individuals), Black-throated Blue Warbler (266 individuals), Blue-headed Vireo (236 individuals), and Hooded Warbler (217 individuals).
