Genetic Variation for Host Preference Within and Among Populations of Drosophila tripunctata

Drosophila tripunctata is a polyphagous species that breeds in both mushrooms and fruits. In a laboratory study, we found substantial genetic variation for host preference among strains. The variation was significant not only for strains from different geographic areas, but also for strains from a population in the Great Smoky Mountains. The difference among strains of D. tripunctata is quite large relative to the average difference in host preference between this species and D. putrida, a strictly mycophagous species. Some preliminary evidence suggests that the variation within D. tripunctata may be a function of its niche breadth and thus maintained by natural selection.
