The EPA Clean Air Status and Trends Network (CASTNET) provides real-world air pollution concentration data in order to evaluate the effectiveness of national and regional air pollution control programs. This report examines trends in air quality since 1990 and presents maps of the geographic distribution of ambient pollutant concentrations and deposition fluxes measured in 2009. CASTNET began collecting measurements in 1991 with the incorporation of 50 sites from theNational Dry Deposition Network (NDDN), which had been in operation since 1987. CASTNET measures rural, regionally representative concentrations of sulfur and nitrogen species and ozone at 84 sites in the United States and Canada.
