In August, 2013, the Southeast Coast Network conducted an assessment of water quality at Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve as a part of the NPS Vital Signs Monitoring Program. Monitoring was conducted following the methods developed by the Environmental Protection Agency as a part of the National Coastal Assessment Program. Water clarity was rated as good at 80% of sites in the assessed and poor at 3% of sites. Five shallow sites (17%) lacked water clarity ratings due to missing Secchi depth measurements. Dissolved oxygen levels rated good at 24 (80%) sites and fair at six sites (20%). Chlorophyll a levels were rated as good at 30% of sites in the assessed area with 60% rated as fair. Chlorophyll a levels at ten percent of sites were rated as poor. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) levels were good at 57%, and fair at 43% of the sites. Dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) levels were rated as good at 30%, fair at 37%, and poor at 33% of the sites. Overall site condition was rated as good at nine of the sites (30%), while 20 sites (67%) were rated as fair, and one site (3%) was rated as poor. A high concentration of DIP was the most common cause for a poor ranking.
