When publishing any compilation of papers, one of the editor's chief responsibilities is to recognize the people behind the scenes. In the case at hand, the organizing committee for the conference included a number of academics and professionals who worked months in advance, shaping the agenda, reviewing the papers, and supporting the effort in hundreds of ways. The committee members that participated included David Ames, University of Delaware; Catherine Bishir and Claudia Brown, North Carolina Department of Archives & History; Richard Candee, Boston University, Michael Day, Maryland Historical Trust; Antoinette J. Lee, National park Service; Richard Longstreth, George Washington Universityl de Teel Patterson Tiller, National Park Service; Richard Wagner, Goucher College, and the editor. Each played a crucial role in establishing a new level of critical dialogue in the field.
