The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Park Service (NPS), and U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) successfully completed a cooperative moose survey of the lower Kobuk River during 16-30 March 2006. The survey area was 4,870 mi2. Using the Geospatial Population Estimator (GSPE), I estimated 3,322 moose (90% CI= 2,828-3,815 moose) within the survey area resulting in a density of 0.7[B1] moose/mi2. The calf to adult ratio was 15.6 calves/100 adults. Subarea estimates for the Kobuk River delta (KRD)(area = 2,256 mi2) and Kobuk Valley National Park (KOVA)(area = 2,614 mi2) were 2,271 moose (90% CI: 1,934-2,607 moose) with a density estimate of 1.0 moose/mi2, and calf to adult ratio of 16.7 calves/100 adults and 1,051 moose (90% CI = 723-1,380) with a density estimate of 0.4 moose/mi2, and calf to adult ratio of 13.3 calves/100 adults, respectively. It appears that the lower Kobuk River sample area encompasses the largest concentrations of moose in Game Management Unit 23. Moose numbers in the lower Kobuk River are healthy and no changes to current harvest regulations are necessary.
