The Deep Lake Strand area is one of five sites selected for intensive study within the Big Cypress National preserve. The study sites are used to inventory the vegetation of the preserve. The Deep Lake Strand site is located along the western border of the preserve and covers a rectangular 5 x 10 km (50 km2) area. The principal vegetation types found in this region are large strangs of cypress, cutover-pine forests, and vast expanses of prairie vegetation.
