Grand Canyon National Park FFI Fire Effects Monitoring Data
Bunn W and Brannfors L. 2014. Grand Canyon National Park FFI Fire Effects Monitoring Data. Grand Canyon, AZ
Fire effects monitoring data collected at Grand Canyon National Park in the National Park Service Intermountain Region. Additional data collected on the North Kaibab District of the Kaibab National Forest are also included. The data were collected by the fire effects monitoring crew primarily between May and October from 1990 to 2013. Data collection history and protocols are described in Bunn, W. 2010. Grand Canyon National Park Wildland and Prescribed Fire Monitoring and Research Plan. Two types of plot monitoring protocols are represented in this database--NPS Fire Monitoring Handbook (FMH, 2003) permanent plots and Grand Canyon National Park rapid assessment protocol (RAP) semi-permanent plots. Data collected from the 50 x 20 m FMH forest plots include tree inventory to obtain density and basal area, fuel load using Brown's method for inventorying surface fuels and biomass, seedling tree density, shrub density, and herbaceous species cover and richness measured via 50 meter point intercept transects. In addition, post-fire assessments are conducted of burn severity to vegetation and substrates and scorch and char of trees. Photographs are taken from eight locations in the plot to document change. Data collected from the 10 m radius RAP plots include tree inventory to obtain density and basal area, fuel load using Brown's method for inventorying surface fuels and biomass, seedling tree density, shrub cover, and herbaceous species cover. In addition, post-fire assessments are conducted of burn severity to vegetation and substrates and scorch and char of trees. Photographs are taken from four locations in the plot to document change.
