The Archeological and Historic Preservation Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-291; 16 U.S.C. 469a-l) gives the federal government, specifically the Department of the Interior to responsibility of mitigating damage to archeological and historical resources. This includes abiding by all environmental statues and recovering data before construction projects.
