Pederson GT, Gray ST, Lesser M, Allen L. LITTLE BIGHORN BATTLEFIELD NATIONAL MONUMENT RIPARIAN FOREST DEMOGRAPHY: HYDROCLIMATIC TREE-ESTABLISHMENT CONDITIONS AND A SEARCH FOR “WITNESS” TREES. Research Permit and Reporting System

A dendroecological analysis of riparian area cottonwoods (Populus deltoides) along the Little Bighorn River at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument (LIBI) in southeastern Montana was conducted to (1) describe the age structure of the gallery forests; (2) identify potential hydroclimatic factors (e.g., floods, drought) that may have influenced establishment and development of the stands; and (3) identify cottonwoods and other trees with potentially dateable fire scars.
