Wind erosion was pervasive in the western Great Basin during glacial and post-glacial times and abraded rocks (ventifacts) are widespread. The complex topography resulted in surface winds that represented both synoptic (largely from the sw) and more localized (such as up and down valleys) flow fields. This study examined palaeowind flow by measuring erosional features on ventifacts. Mapping of Death and Panamint Valleys showed that wind directions were largely constrained by topography.
