An accepted general model for sea-level history in northwestern Washington has been developed by Larsen and applied to coastal archaeology in the region. This model involves a late Holocene submergent coastline obscuring evidence of early-to-mid Holocene sites, explaining their absence in the coastal region. However, recent geological data based on relevelling surveys suggest a very different model of sea-level history for the outer Washington coast, involving an uplifting coastline that existed throughout much of the Holocene. Absence of early coastal sites in that region thus cannot be explained by the effects of sea-level rise; an alternative evolutionary model for regional cultures is considered.
