The Hummingbird Monitoring Network's year-end evaluation for the 2004 monitoring season

In this report, site evaluations and species coverage are described for the HMN's monitoring program in 2004, the third year of monitoring for the HMN. Of the 23 monitoring sites, three did not meet any criteria for long-term monitoring. Of these three, two had been monitoring sites in 2004 only. The remaining site, Coronado National Memorial, had been monitored for two years and in both years was not identified as a contender for long-term monitoring. Thus, we will not monitor at this site in 2005. The monitoring coverage for each species is evaluated and temporal occurrence patterns are reported. Although no species has complete monitoring coverage, the HMN has good breeding sites and migration stopover sites for Anna's, Black-chinned, and Rufous Hummingbirds. In addition to site evaluations and species occurrence patterns, the effect of geographic factors on hummingbird diversity patterns are analyzed and discussed.
