Archaeological site surveys of portions of the Quinault, Queets, Hoh, and Quileute River Valleys during the summer of 1977 produced a limited inventory of apparently poorly preserved sites. Although survey activities explored procedures for working in this difficult environment, and emphasized auger probing, soil ph and phosphate measures, and vegetation study of localities reported in the ethnohistoric literature, these techniques failed to be productive. In addition to the dynamic nature of valley trains, dense vegetation, and largely perishable cultural inventories, large-scale logging activities also appear to have had an adverse impact on the region's archaeological remains.
