West of Bisbee and Tombstone, the Huachuca Mountains have also been the scene of mining activity. The Montezuma Canyon, within Coronado National Memorial, on the southern end of the Huachucas typifies the boom and bust of medium sized mining districts from the late 1880s through the twentieth century. But mining in the canyon predates any other Cochise County mine site, a significant story. The State of Texas Mine, the largest producer, still shows signs of these early workings.
