The author divides the flora of the Great Smoky Mountains into intraneous-- species within their ranges -- and extraneous -- species whose main distributions are elsewhere. Intraneous species constitute 69 per cent of the 248 species considered. Of the extraneous species, 26 per cent are northern species at their southern limit, and 5 per cent are southern. The remainder are probably disjuncts.
