Determination of eligibility Clark-Smith mines, Coronado National Memorial

The National Park Service is requesting concurrence from the Arizona State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) on a consensus determination of eligibility (DOE) for the historic Clark-Smith Mines sites within Coronado National Memorial, Arizona. The Clark-Smith Mines are assessed for significance under the National Register of Historic Places under Criteria A, B, and D. Located in Montezuma Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains, just west of the better known State of Texas Mine, the Clark-Smith Mines represent a smaller mining operation during four significant periods (pre-1854, during the Tombstone boom; during the Copper boom of the early 1900s; and the Great Depression era) under the broad pattern of mining history, a significant theme within Arizona's history from the prehistoric era to the present. However, these sites lack the level of integrity of historic mining sites with their associated sites and structures and mining systems to be considered eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
