Erosion indices and field surveys were produced for Coronado National Memorial to prepare an assessment of current erosion in uplands areas of the park. 864 of the park’s 4750 acres were observed by transect in the field. Of the observed area, 11.5 acres were mapped as currently active erosion features. Using field observations, detailed satellite and elevation data to help model and map erosion through the whole park, 428 acres of the park were mapped as landscape features associated with active erosion. Data collected in the field included GPS locations of active rill, gully, debris flow and sheet erosion features with ocular estimates of depth, width and length to help estimate soil loss in that location within roughly the last half decade. From this data, areas of the Montezuma Canyon, and granitic slopes and alluvial fans were identified as areas with accelerated erosion that may require management attention. There were other areas that exhibited some serious erosion, but their context and severity were documented without recommending action unless further deterioration occurs.
