Great Smoky Mountains National Park comprises a topographically complex and ecologically diverse landscape; such a landscape is fraught with challenges for ecological modeling. Despite apparent limitations, modeling in this region provides a useful tool for land managers and resource specialists to locate and assess potential habitat. An understanding of the geographic distribution of suitable habitat, as generated by these models, is a critical component of species conservation.
